From the Lab to Everyday Life: Spray Expertise Delivers hansgrohe Water Enjoyment

Schiltach, May 2026. What defines a truly good shower experience? For hansgrohe, the answer lies in the spray pattern. For decades, the brand has been dedicated to making water an experience that appeals to both body and senses. This philosophy is reflected in recent innovations such as the Avalegra AquaUnit and Raindance Alive. Now, hansgrohe is offering insights into the development approaches behind its spray technologies.

In the company’s dedicated Spray Research Lab, technologies are created that decisively influence how water feels on the skin. Under realistic conditions, concepts are tested, simulated, and refined. The goal is to develop products that deliver a pleasant water experience while also requiring as little hot water consumption and cleaning effort as possible.

What Lies Behind Modern Nozzles

The latest innovation from the spray lab is a new generation of nozzles featuring FlexPower technology. These nozzles are used, among other applications, in the hansgrohe Avalegra AquaUnit—a novel combination of washbasin and faucet with an integrated spray function.

“For us, every development begins with the question of how water should feel in everyday use. Our ambition for this nozzle was a permanently stable spray pattern with minimal maintenance effort,” explains Jochen Armbruster, Research and Development at hansgrohe.

The result is a cloverleaf-shaped nozzle outlet. Thanks to the elastic geometry of the silicone nozzle, it adapts to changing water pressure and ensures a uniform, consistent spray pattern. This dynamic movement helps reduce limescale deposits at an early stage. As the nozzle expands and contracts, deposits lose their adhesion and simply flake off. The technical concept follows a familiar everyday principle: honey bottles that open and close their outlet when pressure is applied. The development team transferred this principle to the spray nozzle, creating a precisely calculated geometry that flexibly expands with water flow while remaining shape-stable.

Spray Expertise Beyond the Nozzle

At the heart of the hansgrohe Raindance Alive shower line is also the spray pattern. However, hansgrohe’s spray expertise extends far beyond nozzle development alone. Newly designed spray modes are specifically tailored to different usage scenarios. hansgrohe differentiates between Comfort, Performance, and Focus spray types.

For Raindance Alive showers, hansgrohe combines two Comfort spray types: RainAir and PowderRain. RainAir creates a dense shower spray with air-enriched droplets, delivering a full-bodied shower sensation inspired by invigorating tropical rainfall. PowderRain, by contrast, is reminiscent of a gentle summer rain. Ultra-fine droplets form a soft spray that envelops the body. Achieving this precise balance requires meticulous attention to detail—but the result speaks for itself. An independent consumer study* found that 9 out of 10 test users love the feeling of Raindance Alive.

* The Smart Insights consumer study was conducted with 100 participants in July/August 2024.
