Impressive Team Performance, Stage Win and Maglia Ciclamo for Peter Sagan

Giro d’Italia 2021
Schiltach, May 2021. Last Sunday, the BORA - hansgrohe road cycling team finished the Giro d'Italia, which was held for the 104th time, successfully. With a unique team performance, Peter Sagan managed to win the tenth stage of the Tour of Italy and ultimately also the Maglia Ciclamo. It is the eighth pointed jersey of the Slovakian rider's career. The only downer for the professional team was the retirement of Emanuel Buchmann after a crash at the beginning of the 15th stage of the race. Matteo Fabbro finishes the race in 32nd place, the best overall achievement.

About the Giro d'Italia

The legendary cycling race has been held in Italy since 1909. At that time, not even half of the 127 starters reached the finish in Milan after eight strenuous stages. The Giro d'Italia was initiated by the editors of La Gazetto dello Sport, an Italian daily newspaper devoted exclusively to sports. The pink jersey color for the overall leader is also thanks to them. This year, the traditional race started in Turin on May 8. The motto of this year's Grand Tour race in Italy was ‘shorter and steeper’. The 48,000 meters of altitude covered in the race and numerous mountain finishes attracted a particularly large number of climbers in the overall classification to take part in the race. Participating in the iconic Tour of Italy from the BORA - hansgrohe racing team were Giovanni Aleotti (IT), who is making his Grand Tour debut, Cesare Benedetti (IT), Maciej Bodnar (PL), Matteo Fabbro (IT) and Felix Großschartner (AT). Experienced rider Daniel Oss (IT) participated in his 13th race in this year's Giro. The team's leadership duo consisted of Emanuel Buchmann (GER) and Peter Sagan (SLO). Sagan captured the sprint jersey in the 10th stage after terrific cooperation of the entire team and was able to defend it until the end of the Tour. Many highlights and altitude gains awaited the top riders and spectators, especially in the second half of the race. Particularly, the 13th stage with the extremely steep climb to Monte Zoncolan or the 5,700-meter altitude stage in the Dolomites with a total of three mountain passes and the arrival in Cortina d'Ampezzo delighted cycling enthusiasts. Another highlight was the queen stage over the Bernadino and Splügen passes, which would probably have suited mountain specialist Emu Buchmann. The premium brand from the Black Forest wishes a fast and good recovery and looks forward to future team successes in the upcoming races.
